What Is the “Bland Diet” for Dogs?
A bland diet for dogs can soothe their digestive system and typically consists of protein and a simple carbohydrate. You should avoid fiber and added fat.
Why Would I Feed My Dog a Bland Diet?
A bland diet, much like its name would leave you to believe, is a diet that consists of foods that are bland and easy to digest. A bland diet is most often prescribed to dogs who have an upset digestive system, abnormal bowel movements, and an unusual appetite. Putting your dog on a bland diet can help to regulate their digestive system and restore their appetite and regular bowel movements.
Preparing a Bland Diet
A bland diet for your dog must be low in fiber and fat so that the food is easily digestible. A bland meal usually consists of a source of protein and a simple carbohydrate. Your choice of protein should be cooked as followed:
- Chicken or turkey – Boiled in unsalted water, fat skimmed off the top, cooled, and shredded
- Ground turkey or beef – Pan fried without added fat or spices, drained, and cooled.
- Eggs – Scrambled without added fat or spices, cooled.
Whatever carbohydrate you choose, it must be bland. A few options are steamed white or brown rice, mashed sweet potato, oatmeal, or pasta. If your dog has diarrhea, you may consider pureed pumpkin or bananas.
How Long Should I Feed My Dog a Bland Diet?
More often than not, it is recommended to keep your dog on a bland diet for 2-3 days until they begin to show signs of improvement. After 2-3 days you can begin combining their normal diet with the bland diet until they are ready for their normal diet full time.
Before deciding anything for your dog’s health, you should consult with their veterinarian. It is beneficial to know that if your dog is vomiting, you should not feed them anything for 12-24 hours, so as to not upset their stomach further. You should, however, give them water during this time to avoid dehydration.
