There are two types of bergamot. The herb, monarda didyma, is perfectly fine for dogs and is often used in their hair care products. Your dog can safely consume either fresh or dried bergamot leaves. However, if they consume too much, they may experience gastrointestinal upset. 

The more commonly used fruit and essential oil, citrus bergamia, also known as bergamot, are not safe for dogs. If consumed or applied topically, your dog may experience vomiting, diarrhea, dermatitis, depression, and skin irritation.
