Can Dogs Eat Sorrel?
Yes. However, in large quantities, it will become toxic to dogs.
Sorrel, often referred to as garden sorrel, is not toxic to dogs when consumed in small amounts. However, if your dog ingests large amounts of sorrel, they may experience a variety of symptoms, including:
- Burning in the mouth
- Drooling
- Swollen mouth and face
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Body and muscle tremors
- Lethargy
- Seizures
- Kidney disorders
When a dog consumes sorrel, they will be exposed to raphides which are a known irritant. When raphides break down they will release calcium oxalate crystals which are also known irritants. If the calcium oxalate crystals cut the mouth, throat, or gastrointestinal tissues, your dog could experience severe inflammation.
If your dog begins exhibiting any of these symptoms, you should take them to the vet immediately.
