Why does my dog keep stretching their back legs?
Dogs stretching their legs is a perfectly normal behavior. They may do it when they wake up, when you let them out of their crate or kennel, or as a sign that they want to play. Sometimes dogs will stretch out their legs and lay their bellies on the ground in a position called “splooting”. This helps them rest their legs and when they’re hot, it helps them cool off by allowing heat to transfer from their bodies to the ground.
Can Stretching Be a Bad Thing?
If you notice stretching as a chronic behavior it could be a sign of an ongoing issue. Dogs will stretch their hind legs if they are experiencing abdominal pain in hopes that the stretching will relieve the pain or pressure they feel. This behavior could point to digestive problems, injuries, or more serious issues such as ulcers or abdominal cancer. If you see frequent chronic stretching, especially in conjunction with other symptoms, it is worth consulting your veterinarian.
Frequent stretching may also be a sign that your dog is not getting enough exercise. Pay attention to when your dog is stretching and what the potential causes might be. Research your dog’s breed and make sure you are familiar with their needs. Different breeds need different amounts of exercise to stay happy and healthy. Regardless of breed, it is a general rule of thumb for dogs to get at least 15-20 minutes of outdoor exercise each day.
